It seems like every time the freestyle skiing community forgets about the talents of Candide Thovex, the Frenchman comes back roaring to previously uncharted levels. In 2007, Candide returned from a run of injuries to shock the world with an X-Games Skier Slopestyle Gold Medal. His run was flawless, and clearly showed he never lost a step.

Fast forward to 2010, and after another slew of injuries, the man has once again returned to competition glory with an extremely impressive win at the 2010 Red Bull Linecatcher event held in Vars, France.

The Red Bull Linecatcher, now in its 2nd year, is a backcountry skiing competition that combines elements of the Freeride World Tour with X-Games. Just imagine skiers hucking massive cork 720s and slaying double stager cliff lines and you have some idea of what to expect from this contest.

Candide managed to put together his winning run using his last of the three allotted runs given to each competitor. He started his run with a massive cork 720 tailgrab off the first cliff, a 360 on the middle kicker, and sent a massively deep flatspin 360 off the final cliff.

Teen skiing prodigy Sean Pettit continued to show the world his backcountry prowess, as he earned 2nd place as well as “Best Trick” of the contest. Pettit’s line included a stomped cork 360 off a monster cliff to earn the Best Trick title.

In one of the “feel good” moments of the contest, long-time pro CR Johnson notched what has to be one of the most meaningful podium finishes of his career with his 3rd place honor. As many of you know, it was only a few years ago where not only was CR’s skiing career in jeopardy, but so was his life. Johnson was the unfortunate victim of nearly fatal head trauma after being struck by another skier, while perched under a nearby cliff band. Now to watch CR toss a run filled with stunts such as a cork 7, 360 and a rodeo 7 is something simply amazing to see.
