Avoid Tylenol and now other medications after skiing

Earlier today we reported on why you should avoid Tylenol if you’re sore after skiing. Here’s what we were talking about:

“If you find yourself sore after a long, hard day of skiing or snowboarding…be wary of taking Tylenol.

Last month, 6 million bottles of Tylenol Arthritis Relief Caplets were recalled because people were complaining of stomach problems after taking them. The problems related to the presence of the chemical 2,4,6-tribromoanisole (TBA). TBA comes from the breakdown of a chemical in wood pallets used to store and transport packaging materials for the pills.

This month, it appears the problem extends beyond just the arthritis pills and into other Tylenol products, like Tylenol Extra Strength, Rolaids and many children’s medicines. At this point, 54 million more bottles have been recalled, putting the total number of recalled bottles at 60 million.

McNeil Healthcare LLC released this statement: “The health effects of this chemical have not been well studied, but no serious events have been documented in the medical literature. In addition to the product recall, McNeil Consumer Healthcare is continuing its investigation into the issue and is taking further actions that include ceasing shipment of products produced using materials shipped on these wood pallets and requiring suppliers who ship materials to our plants to discontinue the use of these pallets.”

So if you’re sore after skiing, don’t pick up a bottle of Tylenol Extra Strength.”

We didn’t mention that Benadryl and St. Joseph Aspirin was also recalled. We also have a new quote from Deborah M. Autor, director of the FDA’s Office of Compliance: “When something smells bad, literally or figuratively, companies must aggressively investigate and take all actions necessary to solve the problem,” Autor said at a news conference. “McNeil should have acted faster.”
