Deadly avalanche in Colorado

Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Jasper “Jaz” McGrath. The snowboarder from Minnesota was in Vail when he went missing on January 6th.

Yesterday, the Vail Ski Patrol discovered his body in an area near the Miller Cliffs outside the boundaries of the ski area. Jaz accessed the area via a Blue Sky Basin backcountry gate. Jaz, a ski instructor at Vail last season, apparently died of hypoxia. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center reported that the slope aspect faced north and the angle was in that prime avalanche zone of 34 degrees.

Let this me a reminder to all of us to take an avalanche awareness class and be fully prepared before we venture out into the backcountry.
