Ever since this whole Conan O’Brien/Jay Leno/NBC/The Tonight Show drama started, Conan has become more popular with the public. Never was this more true than last Friday night, when Conan’s viewership increased by 50%, beating out David Letterman. Conan’s manager, Gavin Polone thinks he knows the reason why: “People who never watched Conan before are saying, ‘I’ll try it. Now they’re saying, ‘This is good, I’ll stick with it.”‘

May be a little late for that.

Conan and NBC are close to reaching a deal, however some sticky issues revolve around the fact that Conan wants to take the characters he created on the show with him wherever he goes (Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, the Pimpbot 5000 and the Masturbating Bear).

In order for him to keep the rights to his characters, NBC may make him give up some other negotiating points in the deal. Whatever those are, Conan made it very clear his staff is to be completely taken care of, no matter what happens.
