Lindsey Vonn, the winning machine, wins again in Cortina today and helps Haiti

As we predicted yesterday following an awesome training run, Lindsey Vonn (nicknamed “the winning machine” in Europe) dominated the Super G race today in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, winning by more than half a second. In second was Switzerland’s Fabienne Suter and in third was Sweden’s Anja Paerson. To add some icing on the cake, Lindsey is auctioning off her winning bib for relief efforts in Haiti. What a gal.

Lindsey was thrilled that she was able to show her dominance on a technical course. “I’m really happy,” she said, “Thankfully the technical races can’t hold me down. I  feel like I’m finally in a good rhythm. I  just keep fighting in super G and downhill. I know what to do now. I just have to ski aggressively and I have to trust my line.”

With this top podium win, Lindsey again takes the lead in overall World Cup standings from Maria Riesch (one of her best buddies), leaving Maria fuming over her mistake in today’s race that landed her in 15th place. Many racers made crucial errors in this race, approaching many gates blind (due to positioning of turns and jumps etc). Maria found that she came around one turn too fast and had to slow her speed down immensely to avoid crashing. “It’s always hard to have exactly the right line from inspection and to bring it into the race because you’re so quick everywhere and when you stand there for inspection you go, ‘OK I can look on this or this sign for my direction,’ then you come there with 100 [kilometers per hour] and you have no time for looking”, Riesch said.

She continued, “There were a lot of blind gates and it’s a pretty fast course so you had to know exactly where you were going and have the pressure and the timing right. I made a mistake on the bottom – my pressure wasn’t exactly perfect – but I kept it going thankfully.”

Lindsey was aware of the technically difficult aspects of this course, and she felt relieved that she was able to overcome her apprehensions: “It’s always nerve-racking. Every race I’m nervous and adrenaline is pumping and you never really know how you’re going to do,” she said. “Super G is a really tricky event because you have that one inspection and you have to execute. I knew there were some really tricky sections of this course but if I attacked, even if I made mistakes, things would be OK. When you get to the finish line and you see No. 1, it’s a big sigh of relief … obviously tons of happiness. It’s so rewarding when you have success like that. I’ve worked really hard and it’s so awesome when things come together like this.

I’m pretty positive, pretty optimistic right now,” she went on. “There aren’t too many technical events left, so if I can execute the next couple weeks, I hope that things should be looking better.”

Stay tuned to theskichannel.com to see how tomorrow’s downhill in Cortina goes. If it goes like every other downhill race this season, Lindsey will continue to live up to her nickname.
