Lindsey Vonn doesn’t get another hat trick as Poutiainen wins in Cortina

It would be a bit much to expect Lindsey Vonn to grab two hat tricks this year (winning three consecutive World Cup events). While she didn’t podium today in Cortina during the GS race, she still scored points and is still ahead of Maria Riesch in overall standings, 1106-1050.

Tanja Poutiainen from Finland was the star today, proving that her back problems aren’t problems at all anymore. She won today for the first time since the season’s opening race in Soelden. She said: “It was a great day for me. I started my season really strong in Soelden and Levi was realy good. Then I had some problems with my back and it was kind of tough to come back. I was not where I expected to be. Now I’m there again and I feel really good.”

Rounding out the podium were Victoria Rebensburg from Germany (first career podium) and Germany’s Kathrin Hoelzl.

Lindsey came in 19th, and while she wasn’t making excuses, she (as well as other racers) complained that the injection of the ice near the bottom of the course made it nearly impossible to bring an aggressive attack. This is not the first time we’ve heard this argument. “Honestly, I think this race was ruined because of the ice,” she said. “I mean, this is the best snow on earth and for them to inject the bottom, I think it’s completely idiotic. i don’t want to make excuses. I know I could have skied better. But at the same time, it’s just almost impossible to get everything working correctly, because if your edges are too sharp on the top then you have no chance anyway. Then if your edges are too dull on the bottom, then you don’t have any grip. It’s kind of a lose-lose situation.”

She continued: “I wanted to get confidence by getting to the finish and that’s what I did,” she said. “It’s an OK result. It’s not what I was hoping for by any means. It’s been a frustrating season for me in giant slalom but  combine the two feelings [of being among the top contenders like she was in the first run of the Maribor GS and then finishing a race] and hopefully it turns into a good result in Vancouver.”
