Lindsey Vonn looks to continue streak at last World Cup before Winter Olympics

Lindsey Vonn took to a conference call with reporters this afternoon.  Reporters from the New York Times, Washington Post, ESPN, Sports Illustrated et al quizzed Vonn about her preparations, mindset, and reactions to hearing things like “The Vonncouver Games.”

NBC charges ahead, it’s platform for selling these games to America is resting on the immense talent and beauty of Vonn.  But, while Winter Olympic frenzy begins to move into overdrive here at home, Vonn and her incredible focus remain in Europe.

“I think it’s been good for me to be in Europe, I don’t see what’s going on TV, my friends have been writing me telling me about it, but my focus is still here.” said Vonn.

“Here” is St. Moritz, Switzerland where Vonn will try to keep alive her historic streak in downhill.  Vonn is a perfect five-for-five in downhill.  The last time anyone swept all World Cup downhills?  1973.  You may not know the name of Austrian great Annemarie Moser-Proll, but you can bet Vonn does.  Moser-Proll is the winningest women’s ski racer.  Ever.  She won six overall titles, including five in a row (1971-75).  And during the 1972-73 season Moser-Proll won all eight downhills.

Vonn leads Germany’s Maria Riesch by 56 points for the overall title, heading into a trio of races this weekend in St. Moritz — a super-combined on Friday, a downhill on Saturday, and a super G on Sunday.  Snow conditions are “perfect” according to Vonn.

Vonn’s success in the speed events has put a big target on her back.  It’s the entire field vs. Lindsey Vonn.  “It’s hard to stay consistent, it’s hard to say focused,” Vonn revealed.

The drum beat of the Winter Olympics is getting louder, but for Lindsey Vonn this weekend is all about St. Moritz.  “You definitely have to stay in the moment.  I have to get this weekend over with and hopefully do well and move on to Vancouver.”
