Tragedy strikes the Revelstoke Mountain Resort as two skiers die

An Ontario community is in mourning today as a father and young man have both died while skiing out of bounds at Revelstoke Mountain Resort in British Columbia.

Steve Babb, 47, and Sam Vogl, 17 slid down an icy incline and went over a cliff. Also going over the cliff was Babb’s 16-year-old son Colin, who survived, but broke his ankle.

The party tried walking up the incline, but fell due to the slippery ice, and could not stop themselves before approaching the cliff. The community of Grimsby in Ontario is having a hard time. Ken Watson, manager of the Grimsby Minor Hockey Association, said the community is “pretty much in shock. [He] thinks the reality of it has begun to sink in and now we’re just trying to cope with it, trying to understand”.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Steve Babb and Sam Vogl, and to the entire community of Grimsby.
