Jossi Wells qualifies first at Winter X Games 14 Ski Superpipe, Simon Dumont not fazed after spill

Jossi Wells struggled during his slopestyle runs on Saturday afternoon in unusual fashion. Hours later, the Kiwi would rebound with an impressive performance in the superpipe as he would lead all qualifiers heading into tonight’s finals. Wells would drop a banger run consisting of back-to-back left and right 900s, a 540 into a 720, a switch 720 into an alley-oop flatspin 540, and wrapped things up with a stomped 1080. While the run was the top score of the day, look for Jossi to continue to improve his run tonight with even harder tricks such as the all important double flip.

Simon Dumont suffered a horrific crash while practicing the double flip in the superpipe earlier this week. The spill would take Dumont out of all his scheduled events, except superpipe. With the added focus of only participating in one event, the Bethel, ME native would drop a run in typical Dumont-like fashion. Huge amplitude and solid tricks would allow Dumont to finish an impressive 2nd heading into tonight.

Following Wells and Dumont would be everybody’s favorite French ski duo. Xavier Bertoni and Kevin Rolland are two of the most dialed pipe skiers in the game, something they would use to their advantage in qualifying a respective 3rd and 4th. Rolland would give us a tease of his trick bag with a stomped double flip and a 1260. Tonight I would be surprised if Rolland doesn’t add at least one, if not two more doubles to his run. Rolland is one of only a handful of pipe skiers capable of throwing the double cork 1260, however, it’s not yet known if Rolland has it competition ready. Should make for an interesting final tonight starting in just a half hour at 7pm EST/4pm PST.
