Groundhog tells us we get six more weeks of ski weather

All right, Punxsutawney Phil! Way to give us the news we wanted! This morning, everyone’s favorite groundhog saw his shadow, letting us know we have six more weeks of winter to enjoy.

Phil has done this 114 times now, and only not seen his shadow 15 times (that means he’s seen it 99 times). Seems he’s a big supporter of the ski industry.

In an effort to rain on our parade, meteorologist Chad Meyers said Phil is only right 39% of the time, and that he has no real “predictive skill”. Whatever Chad. Don’t be a hater.

In medieval times, tradition said that halfway between winter and spring, hibernating animals would come out of their caves to check the weather. If they saw their shadows, that meant more winter, and they could go back to sleep. That’s how this tradition started–the early German settlers brought it with them when they immigrated to Pennsylvania.

So get ready for six more weeks of ski weather everyone! Happy Groundhog Day!
