It’s officially Leanne Smith Day in the 2010 U.S. Olympic Alpine Ski Team members’ hometown of Conway.  Local Selectmen voted unanimously Tuesday to issue a proclamation naming Friday, Feb. 5 in Smith’s honor.

The proclamation, generated by Selectmen Crow Dickinson, reads:

“WHEREAS, the 2010 Winter Olympic Games will be held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada from February 12th through February 28, 2010, and WHEREAS, Leanne Smith, a resident of the Town of Conway, former member of the Mt. Cranmore Race Team, the Mt. Washington Valley Ski Team, and a 2002 graduate of Kennett High School, through years of training, hard work and determination has earned a reputation as one of the best young skiers in the world, and WHEREAS, she has gained a place on the U.S. Alpine Ski Team after recent successes at Val d’Isere, France, Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy and St. Moritz, Switzerland, and WHEREAS, Leanne has made all residents of the Town of Conway and the State of New Hampshire proud by representing them in the largest sporting event in the world, and WHEREAS, on behalf of her hometown, the Conway Board of Selectmen wish to convey our support, encouragement, and best wishes to Ms. Smith, and NOW THEREFORE, the Conway Board of Selectmen does hereby proclaim the 5th day of February 2010 as Leanne Smith Day in the Town of Conway.  And we further encourage all residents of the Town of Conway and visitors alike to wish her well and to support her efforts in any way they can.”

“It’s going to be one of the most amazing things I’ve ever had happen to me,” Smith said during a Jan. 28 USOC teleconference call. “I think this February is going to be a highlight of my life so far for sure; I couldn’t be more excited. We’ve got an older group of girls going (to the Olympics) who have had some success and we’ve got a group of eager newcomers who hope to bring success to the team.”

Smith and Co. arrive in Vancouver on Feb. 9 before moving to Whistler for competition, which begins Feb. 14 with super combined. Opening Ceremonies are set for Friday, Feb. 12.
