Switzerland claimed an early gold medal as Simon Ammann won the Normal Hill Ski Jumping competition Saturday, Feb. 13. The 28 year-old started ski jumping when he was 11, because as he put it, he came from a small town and had nothing else to do. Clearly, his prescient decision paid off. Ammann scored a 276.5 on the Whistler hill.

Adam Malysz of Poland took the silver medal and Austrian Gregor Schlierenzauer took the bronze.

The Americans didn’t fare so well. Although they qualified for the finals–which in itself is no easy feat–they literally came up short. Nicholas Alexander and Peter Frenette both had a total of 106.5 points, landing them in 41st. Fellow U.S. athlete Anders Johnson finished 49th.
