Team USA Hannah Kearney wins Olympic moguls gold, Shannon Bahrke takes bronze

An aggressive Hannah Kearney took the first American gold medal at the Vancouver Olympics tonight in the women’s moguls event. U.S. Teammate and 2002 Olympic silver medalist Shannon Bahrke took the bronze. Canadian favorite Jennifer Heil grabbed the silver medal.

The Americans were hoping for a sweep, as Heather McPhie was third going into the finals and Michelle Roark was sitting in seventh. At the Lake Placid World Cup in January, the U.S. women finished first through fourth. Roark had a tough crash in the middle of her run, catching an edge in the soft snow when she landed her 720 jump. McPhie was having a perfect run, but over-rotated her back flip at the bottom, lost her balance and fell just before the finish.

Kearney however, skied a perfect run–and the fastest of the evening. Her back layout and helicopter were textbook.
