College student dies in ski accident

Sad news to report amongst the Olympic joy. A college student from Davis, California was killed Saturday at the Bluewood ski resort near Dayton, Washington (southeast).

19-year-old Richard O’Brien was a student at Whitman College. He was skiing at Bluewood when he struck a tree. An ambulance and helicopter were dispatched to the scene, but tragically, Richard passed away in the ski patrol room.

Yet another reminder of how dangerous our winter sports can be. On the heels of the tragic death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili, let us all be reminded of the fragility of human life. Let’s take nothing for granted.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of both Mr. Kumaritashvili and Mr. O’Brien.
