Another serious Olympic injury means another possible lawsuit for Vancouver Olympic organizers

For the record, Slovenian cross-country skier Petra Majdic is maybe the most hardcore person we’ve ever encountered. Girl was warming up for the 1.2 kilometer cross-country ski race in the Olympics on Wednesday when she tumbled down a gully after hitting an ice patch. She broke both ski poles and ski tip. She broke four ribs and collapsed a lung! Here’s the kicker–not only did she still race…girl won the bronze medal!! Wow!!

The Slovenian Olympic Committee is pissed that no one fixed the gully (hole). Blaz Perko is the deputy chief de mission for the Slovenian team: “Somebody should have taken care of that hole [gully],” Perko said. “There was not enough protection. The safety of the skiers was at risk. We have protested to the venue management and the ski experts. We will see about legal action. It might be a possibility.” The tragic death of luger Nodar Kumaritashvili may also bring some legal action, although that possibility is diminishing.

Majdic was awarded Slovenia’s Golden Order of Services “for an exceptional performance under difficult odds.” She showed up to the Olympic medal ceremony in a freakin wheelchair for Pete’s sake.

She was originally going to compete in today’s women’s pursuit race, but has withdrawn for obvious reasons. Majdic was considered Slovenia’s best hope for their first gold medal…but frankly the fact that she was able to pull off a bronze is beyond incredible to us.
