Bode Miller wins Winter Olympics gold in the super combined

Bode Miller’s redemption song is complete.  Bob Costas’ favorite wipping boy of the Turin Winter Olympics is the hero of the Vancouver Winter Olympics.  Miller skied a daring, on-the-edge slalom run to win the super combined and earn his first WInter Olympics gold medal.  With a gold, silver, and bronze in three Whistler races, America’s greatest skier has answered his critics and cemented his place as the greatest American ski racer ever.

Ted Shred rockin’ the pink sunglasses, blazed the top section, held on in the mid section, almost bailed near the bottom, and pulled a full circle move in the finish area.  Love watching Ted Ligety turn.  The GS could be his if he can nail his run.

American Ted Ligety sat at the top of the podium for five racers, until Croatian Ivica Kostelic bested the American by just over a half second.  Ligety finishes just off the podium in fifth.

Bode Miller had a monster slalom run.  The last third of the course, Bode was gassed and looked to just be hanging on.  But, even when Bode Miller is just hanging on, he’s fast.  Miller went up 0.33 seconds.  Sitting in seventh after the downhill, Miller needed to best at least 4 racers to land on the podium.  He did more than that.

The next three failed to beat the pace Miller had set.  Didier Defago (4th position) and Hans Olsson (5h position) both crashed.  After Carlo Janka failed to best Miller, the American was assured yet another medal.

Two racers then had a chance at Miller.  Italy’s Paris Dominik had a squirly run and was no threat, finishing three seconds back.  And then there was the last man, Aksel Lund Svindal, the story so far in alpine at the Winter Olympics.  “The man, the myth, the legend,” the PA announcer boomed before the Norwegian dropped in.  Svindal gave away half his lead on the top section, straddled a gate in the mid-section, and Bode Miller wins his first gold medal at the Winter Olympics.
