Slideshow of Bode Miller’s Olympic super combined win

As most of the world now knows, U.S. Ski Team athlete Bode Miller won a gold medal Sunday in the men’s Olympic super combined race–and what a race it was.

Miller was sitting in seventh before his blazing slalom run. “If I have a good slalom, I can definitely do it,” Miller said after the downhill portion of the race. “I am going to be going full gas.”

And he did. After Miller’s solid slalom showing, many held their breath as one by one, the top alpine skiers in the world either came up short or made mistakes on the softening course. It finally came down to Norway’s Aksel Lund Svindal, who was sitting in first with a .76 second lead over Miller. But once Svindal made a mistake and was out, the crowd erupted for Miller.

“We love Bode Miller!” a nearby Canadian couple shouted to us. “We love how he says whatever he thinks, whatever he wants. And he’s so talented.”

Finally that talent was rewarded, and there are still two more races to go where Miller can again collect more golden hardware (Tuesday’s GS and Saturday’s slalom).
