Sad news to report. No one was killed, but 2 people were injured today when a man opened fire on a group of students outside of a Colorado middle school.
One person is in custody. The shooter was described as a man with long blonde hair, wearing a hat. The eerie aspect of this story is that Deer Creek Middle School, the location of the shooting, is located in Littleton, Colorado, and is only 3 miles away from Columbine High School–made famous by one of the most horrendous and deadly school shootings in history.
One victim sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was rushed to a nearby hospital. The other victim was hit in the arm. Both are expected to survive. A student witness described the shooter to KDVR: “From what I could see he was older, not like a teenager,” the student said. “It sounded like fireworks. It was a very big gun, looked like a rifle.”
No motive has yet been hypothesized.
UPDATE 4:02 PT: Several witnesses say math teacher David Benke charged and tackled the gunman after he fired his second shot. If not for Mr. Benke, more shots may have been fired. The two victims are in 7th and 8th grade.
