Julia Mancuso, sitting pretty with two silver medals, has opted out of Friday’s Winter Olympics slalom.  Mancuso will be defending her giant slalom gold medal on Wednesday.  But, Mancuso said she did not feel her slalom skiing was up to medal calibre, telling the Associated Press, “”It’s just a lot of work to race another Olympic event, and as good as my slalom is, I honestly don’t feel like it’s good enough for a medal.”

Mancuso’s decision opens up one of the four American slots.  Her withdrawal is already good news for Megan McJames, the country music listening youngster from Park City.  U.S. women’s head coach Jim Tracy said McJames would most likely get a start.

With Lindsey Vonn and Sarah Schleper coming to these games with a guaranteed spot in slalom, and now with McJames getting the third spot, that leaves Hailey Duke (Bosie, ID) and Kaylin Richardson (Edina, MN) stressing over the fourth and final spot.  A decision is expected on Thursday.

Mancuso is already looking forward to a big celebration when she arrives home to Squaw Valley on Sunday.  “My friends have a band and they’re going to play, and we’re just going to have a lot of fun.”
