A while back, we let you all know about some of the coolest heli-skiing west of the Mississippi. Here was our story:
“Spend much time in central Nevada? Didn’t think so. Why would you? It’s not Vegas, and as far as I can tell, the world famous Bunny Ranch isn’t nearby.
Seriously though, most people aren’t familiar with this region of Nevada, but we’re here to tell you that if you’re interested in heli-skiing, you should be.
The Ruby Mountains cover this region of the state, and the Ruby Mountains Helicopter Skiing program is a hidden gem. This is the program’s 32nd winter, so they’ve been around for a while, but we still get a lot of questions about skiing options in Nevada.
Over three days in the Ruby Mountain Range heli-skiing experience, skiers are guaranteed 39,000 vertical feet, and mountains that have been untouched by gold-rush-crazy miners from way back when. Ruby Mountains Helicopter Skiing guide Tom Carter explains: “The good thing about the Rubies is that they’re not mineral rich. If they were, we wouldn’t have this. They’d be mined like the rest of Nevada.”
The remote location of the Ruby program is both a blessing and a curse. The experience is unique and completely preserved, since it’s impossible to access the terrain without the use of helicopter. But, explains proprietor Joe Royer, “I love it here, but it’s always been tough to market a location that’s really centered in the middle of Nevada. People just don’t realize what we have out here.”
The Heli experience in the Rubies goes beyond the skiing. They have a 10-room lodge on Reds Ranch which gives you home cooked meals (prepared by Royer’s wife Francy), massage therapists and string musicians on call. Nice way to unwind after a hectic day of heli-skiing.
“It’s different from a lot of the ski industry in that there’s no real hype here,” Royer said. “You don’t have a lot of the chest beating. It’s pretty much just about skiing in the mountains, not a lot of people talking about what they did where. But we encourage everybody to come here. We get all types of heli-skiers here, and I think it’s important to let people know that anybody can do this. You don’t have to be an expert, but just enjoy skiing.”
If you’re wondering if now is a good time to hit up the Rubies…just check out this video they sent out.
