Massive Earthquake hits Chile, tsunami expected to hit Hawaii

A massive 8.8 earthquake has struck Chile and is expected to push Tsunamis all throughout the Pacific Basin.  One of the expected targets will be Hilo Bay on the big Island of Hawaii as well as Kahului Harbor in Maui.  The Robinson Crusoe Islands were already struck with a big wave from the Earthquake and there has not been a pacific wide Tsunami alert like this since 1964.

At this time, nearly 100 people have been reported to have perished in the quake and that number is expected to rise significantly.  The quake occured near Concepcion but also near Santiago.  But literally there have been reports of people feeling the quake in Los Angeles and Japan – yes you read that right.

Chilean President Michele Bachelet has declared a “state of catastrophe.”  Our thoughts and prayers are all for those impacted and to be impacted from this horrible tragedy.  Chile has some of the best ski and snowboard terrain in the world.
