One of four missing skiers found at Sugarloaf ski area

At around 4:45 PM yesterday, the ski patrol at the Sugarloaf ski area was notified of four skiers or snowboarders that had gone missing. They were apparently out of bounds in expert terrain on the backside of the mountain.

The Maine Warden Service, along with the ski patrol, searched all night and resumed this morning at 5AM. They have found one of the missing, who said the searchers were in earshot of the three others. Hopefully the three others will be found soon. High winds and more than 5 feet of snow that fell since Wednesday have made the search difficult.

UPDATE: ALL MISSING PERSONS HAVE BEEN FOUND. At about 11 a.m. Monday, wardens said all four were safe and that they were bringing them food so they would have enough energy to get out of the woods. The missing people included:

  • Luke Poisson, 18, of Lewiston. He was on his own.
  • Cory Kott, 18, of North Pole, AK, a student at the University of Maine at Farmington
  • Machali Belluscio, 19, of Keene, N.H., also a student at UMF
  • Aaron Nadeau, 15, of New Portland
