Stratton Mountain, Vt.-Stratton Mountain School’s JIII Alpine Program dominated JIII States this past weekend at Killington, Vt. Brittany Lathrop ’12 won the overall and took home gold in Slalom and Giant Slalom (GS) races. Kieran Mottau ’14 landed on the podium for the boys Slalom, finishing in third-place. Due to their results at JIII States, 10 SMS athletes qualified for the JIII Junior Olympics series on March 13-16. SMS had more athletes qualify than any other program in the East.
Lathrop’s combined first-place finishes in the SL and the GS gave her the first place JIII State overall title, marking her as the best JIII in the state of Vermont. Lathrop, from Manchester, Vt., won the Giant Slalom by more than three-tenths of a second. She won the one-run Slalom race by more than five-tenths of a second.
Whitney Hadden ’14 and Hannah Burwell ’13 finished top five in events throughout the series. In the State Super-G, Hadden earned fourth place while Burwell came in fifth place in the Slalom race.
For the boys, Mottau clinched a spot on the podium and another top-five finish. His third place in the Slalom race and fifth place in the GS gave him fifth overall.
Brittany Lathrop, Hadden, Burwell, Lara Lathrop ’14, Mary Kate Visnic ’13, Mottau, Jack Cusick ’13, Taner Abadan ’13, Brian Mangiacotti ’13 and Zach Kinsella ’13 will represent the SMS JIII Alpine Program at Junior Olympics on March 13-16.
Leah Fowler ’14, Payton Alexander ’15, Chloe Daley ’13 will compete this weekend at Mount Sunapee, N.H., for the 10 remaining Junior Olympic spots.
