Meg Whitman, a conservationist, has bought the land around Alta Lakes. It is thought that she has done so to preserve the land, and to stop a plan to build housing there.

Whitman, former CEO of eBay, is currently running for governor of California on the Republican ticket. She owns the Skyline Ranch near Alta Lakes which she purchased for $20 million, according to the Denver Post. Alta Lakes is a beautiful undeveloped high country valley that lies just south of the ski area. Hikers, bikers and skiers love it.

Silver Mountain Industries, who sold the land to Whitman, had plans to build a neighborhood there.  Environmentalists in Telluride were riled.

In 2007, Whitman donated $1.15 million to preserve land around Telluride as open space.

“She’s committed to the preservation of open space lands in the Telluride region, her involvement with the Valley Floor and from what appears to be a conservation buyout of Alta Lakes,” said Hilary White, director of Sheep Mountain Alliance. “And for that we are extremely grateful.”

Forbes pegs Whitman’s net worth at $1.2 billion.
