BERLIN – According to Yahoo! News, heavy snowfall in parts of Germany triggered a deadly avalanche and caused thousands of accidents, leaving at least seven people dead and dozens more injured, police said Sunday.
Over 2,000 accidents were reported over the weekend, with at least three deaths. The city of Regensburg reported 46 cars were involved in a highway pileup, 17 injured. 3 people died in other snow-related accidents.
Police spokesman Dieter Betzold reported an avalanche in the Bavarian Alps on Sunday killed a backcountry skier.
The avalanche swallowed up four skiers at the Grosser Traithen mountain near the town of Oberaudorf. While three of the skiers were able to dig themselves out. The group’s fourth member was found dead, Betzold said.
The region got 15.75 inches of fresh snow over the weekend, DDP reported.
