Mountain lions seen in Salt Lake City

Those who frequent the trails around Salt Lake City and Park City, Utah can sometimes expect a possible encounter with a mountain lion come spring, but even then, a sighting is rare. Turns out, rare is in the air, as three mountain lions were seen running in and out of a parking garage early this morning in Salt Lake City, right on the University of Utah campus.

The sightings took place around 7:30 AM, when early risers were getting to work at the University’s Research Park. Commuters stayed in their cars until the coast looked clear, and eventually, the lions ran away.

The mountain lions were caught on camera, and officials believe them to be cubs–about 50 lbs each–who have been separated from their mother. Students and citizens have been advised to be on the lookout for the lions, but to simply make noise and act ‘large’ if they see them. Officials say running can elicit a ‘chase’ response–which would be a pretty rare way to start one’s workday.
