The snowboarder killed in an avalanche while snowboarding in the backcountry of the Arapahoe ski area in Colorado has been identified as 20-year-old Daniel Michelotti, of Spring Grove, Illinois.

Michelotti had lived in Breckenridge and worked for that resort since November of 2009. The coroner’s office claimed the cause of death was suffocation.

The slide happened at about 3PM on Wednesday as Michelotti was riding with friends. The friends were behind and above him when the avalanche broke loose. It was a 150-foot wide avalanche and it slid 800 feet down the mountain.

Our deep condolences go out to the family and friends of Daniel Michelotti.
