Fresh snow coming to Lake Tahoe area this weekend

The Tahoe Daily Tribune reports:

“LAKE TAHOE — A fast and cold system is bearing down on the region, with the potential to drop more than a foot of new snow at higher elevations.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, warm weather ahead of the storm will keep initial snow/rain levels higher — above 6,500 feet — but temperatures will plummet as the system from the Gulf of Alaska passes through.

“It will start fairly gusty, and the heaviest precipitation should be between 4 p.m. and midnight,” said Rhett Milne, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Reno.

Snow will taper into showers Saturday morning, with cold temperatures in the teens, but when all is said and done, Milne said the storm should leave 8 to 14 inches at higher elevations, and 3 to 6 at lake level.

After that, a high pressure system will come into the area Sunday, bringing temperatures early next week up into the 50s, and possibly even the 60s, Milne said.

“It’s going to feel like spring,” Milne said.

While El Niño is still in effect, Milne said there are no more storms in the foreseeable future.
