After leading the German women to three gold medals at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, it was clear Mathias Berthold could get the job done. Apparently that’s what the Austrian ski federation thought anyway, considering they’ve just hired him to be the new coach for the men’s ski team.
Berthold, an Austrian himself, has been working with the German federation for the last seven years. In the 1980′s and 90′s he worked the World Cup circuit, specializing in slalom.
He replaces Toni Giger, who leaves after a disappointing season in which the Austrian men didn’t win a single Olympic medal or downhill race. Perhaps the last straw was Switzerland’s Carlo Janka beating Benjamin Raich for the overall World Cup championship.
We wish Mathias Berthold the best and hope the Austrian men come out strong next year!
