Kornelia Marek blames self and trainer for Winter Olympics positive EPO test

See if you’ve heard this one before:  An athlete tests positive for a banned substance, but has no idea how it got in their system.  Anything’s possible, I guess…

As The Ski Channel first reported on March 12, Polish cross-country skier Kornelia Marek was the first positive drug test at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.  On Wednesday, Marek told reporters that her trainer, Vitali Trypolski, injected her to speed up her recovery.  Marek claims she did not know what was in the injections.

The positive test came about after Poland finished sixth in the 20k relay.  The IOC continues to investigate, and if Marek is found guilty she faces a two-year suspension and will banned from participating in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
