Congratulations to Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation’s Hughston Norton! He took home all the gold medals at the technical events at the Western Region J3 Junior Olympics!

The events were held at Mount Bachelor in Oregon and finished up last Sunday. Norton won the slalom and GS races during a week where the Far West Division competitors dominated, claiming 13 of 18 possible podium spots. “It’s fairly difficult to win one event these days, and to win two shows incredible ability to not get nervous,” said Heavenly’s veteran coach Noel Dufty. “He’s been working a lot on his technical skiing, and it really paid off.”

These wins secured Norton, a freshman at Whittell High School, a spot at the prestigious Whistler Cup on April 9-11. There, he’ll compete against some of the best skiers from the U.S., Canada and Europe in his age group. “Everyone is trying to get the top spot to get to Whistler, to snatch it up and put their name on that age group,” said Dufty, noting Norton won a Whistler Cup title three years ago, joining previous local winners such as Jonna Mendes, Alicia Howard, Wisi Betschart, David Beronio and Marco Sullivan.

“They all turned out to be pretty good skiers.”

It’s always fun to watch the kids at the Whistler Cup grow and progress. You never know who’ll be the next Lindsey Vonn! She started there too!
