Beaver Creek Resort presents first annual Jimmie Heuga Memorial Vintage Ski Race

Beaver Creek, CO- April 4, 2010- Beaver Creek Resort presents the first annual Jimmie Heuga Memorial Vintage Ski Race being held in honor and memory of ski racing legend Jimmie Heuga on Saturday, April 10 from noon-2 p.m. Guests are encouraged to dress in vintage wool skiing attire from any era and use old wood or metal skis to compete for top honors on the Hay Meadow race course which will be a throwback to the 1940s complete with canvas competitor bibs, hand-painted banners, natural bamboo gates, an old fashioned scoreboard and more. Prizes will be awarded for the Best Costume as well as top honors in several racing categories.

The race course will start at the top of the Buckaroo Gondola and end near the base of the Centennial Express Lift. The race fee is $25 for adults and $10 for youth 13 and younger and includes a custom event pin. On the day of the event, there will be an additional $5 race registration fee. The race is limited to the first 100 participants.

The Jimmie Heuga Memorial Vintage Ski Race will recognize winners in four categories including: Adult-Wood, Adult-Metal, Youth-Wood, and Youth-Metal. Prizes include an Epic Pass for the first place finisher in each category, antique ski and winter sportswear provided by, gift certificates, and historical Beaver Creek books.

Spirited spectators are also invited to join in the festivities and watch the Jimmie Heuga Memorial Vintage Ski Race from noon to 2 p.m. followed by a post-race party and awards near the finish from 2:30-3:30 p.m. complete with food and drink specials. An oom-pah band will also entertain the crowd. This is a great opportunity for ski history buffs to showcase their vintage gear and be eligible for Best Costume prizes.

The Vintage Ski Race is part of Vintage SkiFest, a full lineup of closing weekend activities at Beaver Creek that includes the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Friday, April 9 where inductees Jack Benedick, Stu Campbell, Doug Coombs, Sepp Kober, Paul Robbins, Ansten Samuelstuen, Chris Waddell and Sarah Will will be honored. The Jimmie Heuga Memorial Vintage Ski Race will become an annual spring event at Beaver Creek. As a ski racer representing the United States, Jimmie took home Olympic bronze in the slalom at the 1964 Games. Later he was recruited to compete for the University of Colorado powerhouse ski team and while his success on the slopes is greatly admired, his impact on humanity after his ski racing career is one that has touched many. In 1970 Jimmie was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. In 1984 he founded the Jimmie Heuga Center in Edwards to help those suffering from MS pursue an active lifestyle while living with the disease. The Vintage Ski Race pays tribute to a man who shared his deep competitive spirit and passion for the sport of skiing with all.
