The Aspen Music Festival and School announced today that David Zinman, its music director since 1997 (and the director of the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen, which he founded in 2000) has resigned, effective immediately. Zinman was scheduled to conduct five concerts this summer in addition to directing the academy. Alan Fletcher, the president and chief executive of the festival, assured a search is underway to find temporary replacements for the summer events. Permanent replacements will be found later. No reasons have been released for Zinman’s sudden resignation. Fletcher admitted he and Zinman had had their disagreements about certain faculty cuts made in response to the recession last year, but he added: “I have never had any problems with David. He raised the level of everything here and left a great legacy.”
