Junior ski racers ready for this weekend’s Whistler Cup

This weekend starts off the prestigious Whistler Cup, a ski race for the best 11 to 14-year-olds in the world. There are 24 top junior athletes from the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association in Whistler today, ready to rock the slopes.

For the men, J3 Junior Olympic gold medalists Max Hall, Hughston Norton and Jack Auty will all be fighting for podium spots. For the women, Mikaela Shiffrin (first American since 2007 to win gold at Trofeo Topolino, taking gold in GS and slalom) leads the pack.

Many countries are represented this year, including Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Cayman Islands, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, U.S.A., U.S. Virgin Islands as well as Hong Kong, the only new entry this season.

“It’s my honor to welcome all athletes, coaches, families, friends, volunteers and sponsors to this thrilling event,” said Whistler Cup Organizing Committee Event Chair Wayne Holm. “Once again we greet young athletes from many nations, as we watch their passionate involvement in their chosen sport and their eagerness to forge lasting friendships that span the globe. We welcome the world and we hope you enjoy the competition.”

The Whistler Cup is truly a spring board to higher levels of competition. At this year’s Vancouver Games, seven of the medalists at alpine events competed in this Cup in their younger years. Folks like Lindsey Vonn, Julia Mancuso, Tina Maze and Anja Paerson. That tells you something about this event.

Last year, Canada won the event, with the US in second, followed by Japan in third. Training was held yesterday, and competition begins today.
