Sad news today. A landslide near the winter sports town of Merano, Italy, derailed a train, killing nine passengers. The train would have plunged into the river if not for the trees that stopped it. A leaking irrigation pipe up the hillside is being blamed for the slide.
The landslide came without warning, burying the train with water, mud and rock. While the death toll is at nine right now, unfortunately that is not final, as provincial governor Luis Durnwalder explains “there could still be someone buried in the mud”.
Eyewitness Alex Rowbotham said: “The front of the train, the cab, is not there at all and the train is hanging off the rails about five meters from the river.
It is now only a few trees that are holding up the train and preventing it falling into the river.”
Rescue workers spent hours digging people out of the train. Those who are injured are currently being treated at local hospitals.
Our condolences to all who lost a loved one in the landslide today.
