An experienced back country nordic skier who was killed in an avalanche earlier this week has been identified as Honza Galac, 29, of the Czech Republic.

According to CBC News:

Galac was skiing with three other men Sunday on the north face of Observation Mountain when an avalanche was triggered. Police say two men were swept away in the snowslide. Their companions later found them but were not able to revive Galac.

Miroslan Merta, one of Galac’s three friends on the ski trip, told CBC News the group was skiing across a slope when the avalanche struck.

“Immediately when the avalanche stopped, we switched our beacons to rescue mode and tried to find him,” Merta said in an interview Wednesday in Whitehorse.
