As we reported earlier today, a devastating earthquake hit China’s Qinghai province early this morning, which is in a mountainous and impoverished area. The quake had a magnitude of 6.9, and so far, 589 people have been killed and at least 10,000 others have been reported to be injured. About 1,000 people have been rescued alive, and about 700 soldiers are working to clear the rubble that has been left behind.
Many of the homes in the area are made of wood and have earthen walls, and over 85 percent of them have collapsed. Chinese officials believe that the death toll will continue to rise because of the damage to the homes. The Qinghai region is located at a relatively high altitude in the foothills of the Himalaya Mountains.
