That’s right…it’s the world famous Undie 500 happening this Saturday at Vancouver Island’s ski area of Mount Washington. This glorious event will put a cap on quite the spectacular season. The beginning of winter saw huge snowfall for the area, and by the end of the season, it received its second deepest snow accumulation on record.
“This was an unbelievable year,” says Mount Washington spokesperson Brent Curtain. “We received over 13 feet of snow before we started the lifts in late November. By the end of the season over 590 inches of snow fell on the mountain.”
“The snow is a great economic driver for our region,” comments Don Sharpe, Director of Business Operations for the resort. “When we have great snow, the mountain always sees an increase in our skier and snowboarder visits. The entire Comox Valley region benefits from a good snow year at Mount Washington.”
As far as the Undie 500 goes, Saturday should be a hysterically fun time. The lifts will be open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Brent Curtain added: “We’ll have the Natural Pastures Cheese Roll on snow for the first time, and last but certainly not least, the Undie 500 will entertain the crowd on Saturday as well.”
To participate, head to the registration desk, in your underwear of course, and buy a ticket for CAN $30. If you’re brave enough to do a ski race in your unmentionables…good for you. The race begins at 11:15 a.m. down the lower pitch underneath the Eagle Chair.
The Natural Pastures Cheese Roll is also going on that day. A giant cheese wheel is tossed down the slope, and in your underwear, you and five to ten people chase it down. “We’ve never rolled the cheese in winter,” says Curtain, “but we’re sure it will work.” The first to catch the cheese advances to the next round. The grand final winner can take the cheese home with them.
What an awesome way to end the season!!
