At the Great Divide Ski Area and Bald Butte next summer, a three-year-long project will commence to seal off mining waste contaminated by heavy metals.
Steve Opp of the state Department of Environmental Quality says 160,000 cubic yards of contaminated sand tailings will be put in an 8-acre repository and covered with an impermeable lining on Bureau of Land Management property.
He added that work probably won’t begin at Great Divide until next summer, after the repository is constructed, so it won’t interfere with ski operations.
Opp says he’s not sure how much the work will cost. Bids on the project won’t be opened until May 27.
