PARK CITY, UT – Following an incredible Olympic season for both, U.S. Freestyle Ski Team moguls athletes Bryon Wilson (Butte, MT, pictured right) and Heather McPhie (Bozeman, MT) were named the Montana Athletes of the Year.
McPhie and Wilson were both awarded the prestigious honor thanks to a highly successful 2010 season. After breaking out on the World Cup Wilson captured the bronze medal in men’s moguls at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. McPhie also found success for the first time on the World Cup as she took in her first win and marked four podiums for the entire season.
“I want to thank everyone who has supported me,” Wilson said. “It’s an honor to be chosen among athletes of this level and we all know how much hard work it takes to get here. I’d like to congratulate the others on being finalists for this award.”
McPhie and Wilson trained together at Bridger Bowl near Bozeman before heading to Park City, Utah to train with the rest of the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team and coaches months before the Olympics began.
The skiers were the top vote-getters from a deep group of accomplished athletes. The men’s ballot included high school wrestling champion Hunter Azure, Montana State distance running star Patrick Casey, and Montana State football standout Dane Fletcher, the Big Sky Conference defensive player of the year.
McPhie’s competition in the voting was also very strong, the women’s finalists were Montana Lady Griz basketball player Lauren Beck, Montana State-Billings basketball and golf star Kallie Stanhope and Montana State track standout Allison Jones.
