Spyder’s work with the U.S. Ski Team has spanned four decades, but last season, the O.G. skiwear company outdid itself. Working with three-time World Cup overall title winner Lindsey Vonn, Spyder designed eight different custom graphic downhill race suits. Vonn sported a different race suit for each stop on the World Cup circuit as she nabbed her third straight title.
Spyder’s artfully-cool plaid design went way beyond the confines of the World Cup when Vonn appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. It’s the closest America’s most successful skier ever came to something resembling controversy. Wearing the hot pink and black plaid suit, Vonn’s cover shot generated more heat than even the overt swimsuit edition. Vonn came to the dance, and it was Spyder that outfitted her for her big night.
Now Spyder is giving racers and non-racers alike the chance to channel their inner Vonn. The US Ski Team online shop is offering the eight commemorative designs for sale. An additional, new design will be available at multiple race retail stores beginning in September, the graphic being an update on her signature favorite hot pink plaid motif.
“Through the years we’ve had a great ongoing relationship with Lindsey, and it’s fantastic to have her officially as part of the Spyder family,” said Phil Shettig, Spyder’s resort and race general manager. “We formalized a partnership so that we can better support her story.”
“I think these race suit designs are a great way to generate more excitement in our sport and especially appeal to girls and women. I want more females on race courses!” said Vonn.
