Last week two bills were approved which would require minors to wear helmets while they ski and snowboard.
AB1652, which would require ski resorts to impose the helmet requirement and also issue reports on how many people are injured or killed on the slopes each year, was approved in the state Assembly. Sacramento Democratic Assemblyman, Dave Jones, had conflict with ski industry representatives, who complained they should not have to regulate the slopes and the reporting requirement would open them up to legal liability.
Meanwhile, San Francisco Democratic Sen. Leland Yee’s SB880 was structured by requiring minors to wear helmets while riding a bicycle. This would enforce a $25 fine on violators, and was passed with bipartisan support.
Both bills are now moving forward to the state senate for consideration.
