WENATCHEE, WA-

The Mission Ridge Ski and Board Resort has been awarded the Western Region Elite FIS Spring Series, now for the second time in a row.

The resort was selected to host the six-day series event by the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Congress, after once again beating out Mammoth Mountain for the rights.

The races have been roughly scheduled for April 6th -11th, 2011.

While last April’s event was a success, the first Spring Series race day was cancelled due to harsh weather conditions. As a result, event promoters were forced to cram all the races into the remaining five days.

As program director at Mission Ridge, Ryan Shorter recalls his feelings on this years event, “The big thing was our ability to pull it to off with the weather we had,” Shorter explained. “We were able to get 12 races in over five days, which is tough to do”.

Skiers and coaches from around the world were very impressed with the slopes at Mountain Ridge. The event attracted some of the world’s top skiers, including U.S. Olympians Hailey Duke, Sarah Schleper, Stacey Cook and Dane Spencer.

“The thing I heard the most … is how race-focused Mission Ridge is in terms of the culture up there, and how welcomed they felt up there,” Shorter explained.

Shorter estimated that the event pumped around $400,000 into their local economy, with over 300 skiers and coaches residing in town over the six days of the race series.

Shorter said the Mission Ridge Ski Team had an excellent season, sending two members (Colby Granstrom and Brooke Wales) to the Junior World Championships in France (with Granstrom winning the combined) and having others compile top finishes in the Western Region and Northwest Cup races.

In addition to the good news in Wenatchee, an anonymous donor has given $7,500 for tuition scholarships of Mission Ridge Ski Team members. Shorter stated that these donations will double his alleged scholarship budget for the 2011 season.
