Pro snowboarder Kevin Pearce was largely considered as the top threat to Shaun White going into his now successful repeat of Olympic Gold at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Unfortunately, the world was never treated to this possible Olympic duel as Pearce sustained a life-threatening traumatic brain injury on December 31st, 2009 while training in a Park City, UT superpipe.
Pearce, who had helped launch the doubles movement in snowboard halfpipe, was injured while performing a double cork when he caught his toe edge, causing him to slam his head into the icy wall. Despite wearing a helmet, Pearce was severely injured as his head was struck beneath the helmet, above the eye.
Thankfully, on May 1st, after four long months of recovery, Kevin Pearce was able to leave the hospital and return to parent’s home in Norwich, VT.
To recognize not only the high talent that Pearce clearly shows on a snowboard, but also the tremendous courage he has shown throughout his injury, Fox has announced that Kevin Pearce will be among the five nominees for “Choice Action Sports Athlete – Male” at the 2010 Teen Choice Awards. Joining Kevin as nominees are Shaun White, Travis Pastrana, Ryan Sheckler, and Kelly Slater.
Be sure to get out and vote for Kevin as this would be an amazing way to take something so ugly as his injury, and let him know there are millions of people ready to support his comeback to snowboard whenever he is ready.
