Missolua County, Montana Coroner’s office has confirmed that a backcountry skier died in an avalanche last Tuesday on Lolo Peak.

The body of 37-year-old Chris Spurgeon of Missoula was recovered via helicopter on Friday from the peak in western Montana. Searchers had launched a search for Spurgeon after he failed to report to work for two days.

Coroner Mike Dominick reported that Spurgeon, known as an experienced backcountry skier, died of blunt force trauma while skiing alone.

This tragic incident reminds us all that even with the on-set of spring skiing, skiers and riders must continue to practice proper safety when venturing into the backcountry this time of year.
