Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston have announced to Us Weekly that they are getting married.
Even more shocking, the couple has not told former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin of their plans; presumably she found out at the same time with the rest of America.
“We got engaged two weeks ago,” Bristol, 19, told Us Weekly. “It felt right, even though we don’t have the approval of our parents.”
The couple, who welcomed their son Tripp in December 2008, began seeing each other again nearly three months ago after being reconnected during custody proceedings.
The road to marriage might not be entirely smooth after this latest announcement, as the family war between Levi Johnston and Bristol’s mother Sarah Palin hasn’t exactly been a well-kept secret. Levi’s comments regarding her alleged inappropriate use of the word “retarded” to refer to her son Trig (who has Down syndrome) didn’t go unnoticed, and Palin hasn’t been shy to criticize his moves to pose for Playgirl.
“It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be. Hopefully she will jump on board,” Bristol said of her mother during the US Weekly interview.
The Palins family released a statement to the Today show on Wednesday morning: “Bristol at 19 is now a young adult. We obviously want what’s best for our children. Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives.”
So the Palin family reaction appears to be receptive, or at least in the public sphere, leaving us skiers with only one question, “Where are they going on a honey-moon?”
This writer has a couple ideas, that mostly revolve around a certain activity requiring the use of a helicopter in their great state. Perhaps Palin and Johnston might enjoy a heliskiing adventure? While it might be the off-season now, the two could delay their marital vacation for a bit to ensure perfect snow conditions. The couple could even cherish the memories forever if they let the crew from Sarah Palin’s new reality show film their adventure. Whatever they chose, The Ski Channel would like to congratulate the happy kids on their engagement.
