On Saturday July 17, the Miller family will embark on a journey to water ski the length of the Ohio River in order to raise awareness for Disabled American Veterans. Mark Miller, 51, Mark Anthony Miller, 18 and Brandon Miller, 15, will each take turns using a single ski to slalom 10-40 miles at a time until they conclude their adventure next Friday, July 23 in Cairo, IL. Linda Miller will pilot the 18-foot speedboat and serve as a spotter for her husband and two sons, as well as updating their progress online. Mark’s brother, Bill Miller, will follow with a truck and trailer in case the Miller’s should need to pull the boat out of the water for any reason.
The Ohio-based family will drive from their home in Chermont County to Pittsburgh on Saturday morning and hit the water Sunday to start their six day voyage across the 981-mile river. They will stay in motels along the way, except for when they dock in New Richmond, OH where they will stay at their own home. The Miller’s hope to average approximately 160-170 miles a day, which will include about five hours of skiing, two to three hours of navigating the 20 locks and dams along the route, and stopping for gas.
The trip began as a family challenge when Mark told his two boys that he once skied 95 miles non-stop in 1991. Mark Anthony and Brandon wanted to break that record so they came up with the idea to ski the Ohio River. Not only did they want to accomplish the goal of skiing such an incredible distance, they wanted their efforts to benefit a good cause, so they chose the DAV which they have been supporting for years.
