Tour favorite Alberto Contador of Spain, took over the Tour de France’s yellow jersey after grabbing the overall lead from cyclist Andy Schleck.
Schleck, who was desperately working to grow his lead over the attacking Contador, lost time after his bike chain got snagged during the Pyrenees-based Port de Bales climb.
Luxembourg’s Schleck had to stop for roughly half a minute on the final ascent of Stage 15 as he frantically worked to fix the bike’s chain.
The mechanical repair would be the opening that 2-time Tour champion Contador had needed, as he quickly worked to erase the 31 second lead that Schleck held going into today’s stage.
French cyclist Thomas Voeckler of the Bbox team won Stage 15, a 117-mile route between Pamiers and Bagneres-de-Luchon.
Stage 15 brings the cyclists to the foothills of the beautiful Superbagneres ski resort, located just an 8 minute cable car ride from Bagneres-de-Luchon. Le Tour fans visiting the stage finish will be able to ride the 4-passenger gondola to the summit even during the summer months, allowing easy access to the beauty of the nearby mountains of Venasque and Cecire mountains.
