The inaugural Snow Park NZ Junior Armada Slopestyle was recently held on July 13th, 2010 under beautiful bright blue skies.
The picture perfect snow conditions and masterfully built terrain park beckoned a hoard of 45 junior freeskiers, eager to show their skill and style in the opening event of the NZ competition season.
To the surprise of no one, the first family of freestyle skiing, the Wells family, whose members include top pro skiers Jossi Wells and Byron Wells, saw their youngest members Beau-James Wells, 14, and Jackson Wells, 12, take the top spots in the Junior and Youth boys divisions, respectively. Nine year old Manu Barnard, of Wanaka, took out the Grommets division.
In the girls divisions, Queenstown’s Adie Lawrence,16, took out the top spot in the Juniors, while Olivia Jones, 11, of Wanaka and Maggie Little, nine, of Albert Town reigned supreme in the Youth and Grommets age divisions.
“It was great to have Snow Park’s triple line opened and to see the kids getting out there again,” said Head Judge Dion Newport. “The lilypad feature was a big hit with the kids and the course had something for everyone.”
