West Virginia’s parks and recreations chief Ken Caplinger says it’s time to put the shine back in Canaan Valley Resort, and has announced a major $20.8 million makeover.
The improvements include the construction of 100 new rooms and “people movers” designed to transport guests to the nearby Bear Paw ski lodge and lifts at the bottom of the slopes. Caplinger says at least 200 of the lodge’s 250 existing rooms will be demolished during the project.
The improvements come on the heels of The West Virginia Economic Development Authority’s $160 million bond issue to pay for projects at state parks, universities and the Capitol Complex. Repayment for the bond will be made through state lottery revenues.
Construction is expected to begin next year, and should be completed within the next 2 1/2 years.
